چکیده

In recent years, an innovative trend has been growing in applied statistics—it is becoming ever more feasible to build application-specific models which are designed to account for the hierarchical and latent structures inherent in any particular data generation mechanism. Such highly-structured models have long been advocated on theoretical grounds, but recently the development of new computational tools (e.g., hardware, software, and algorithms) for statistical analysis has begun to bring such model fitting into routine practice. In this paper, we describe these methods in the context of empirical high-energy astrophysics. A new generation of scientific instruments such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory are opening a whole new window to the study of the cosmos. Unlocking the information in the data generated with these complex high-tech instruments, however, requires sophisticated statistical models, methods, and computation. Here we discuss the techniques that the California-Harvard AstroStatistics Collaboration have been using to develop application-specific highlystructured statistical models to address these problems in high-energy astrophysics.

Deconvolution in High-Energy Astrophysics: Science, Instrumentation, and Methods

In recent years, there has been an avalanche of new data in observational high-energy astrophysics. Recently launched or soon-to-be launched spacebased telescopes that are designed to detect and map ultra-violet, X-ray, and γ-ray electromagnetic emission are opening a whole new window to study the cosmos. Because the production of high-energy electromagnetic emission requires temperatures of mi...

Highly Structured Models for Spectral Analysis in High-Energy Astrophysics

The Chandra X-Ray Observatory, launched by the space shuttle Columbia in July 1999, has taken its place with the Hubble Space Telescope, the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the Spitzer Infrared Space Telescope in NASA’s fleet of state of the art space-based Great Observatories. As the world’s premier X-ray observatory, Chandra gives astronomers a powerful tool to investigate black holes, expl...

Partially Collapsed Gibbs Samplers: Illustrations and Applications

Among the computationally intensive methods for fitting complex multilevel models, the Gibbs sampler is especially popular owing to its simplicity and power to effectively generate samples from a high-dimensional probability distribution. The Gibbs sampler, however, is often justifiably criticized for its sometimes slow convergence, especially when it is used to fit highly structured complex mo...

Statistical Learning in High Energy and Astrophysics

This thesis studies the performance of statistical learning methods in high energy and astrophysics where they have become a standard tool in physics analysis. They are used to perform complex classification or regression by intelligent pattern recognition. This kind of artificial intelligence is achieved by the principle “learning from examples”: The examples describe the relationship between ...

Damping of visco-resistive Alfven waves in solar spicules

Interaction of Alfven waves with plasma inhomogeneity generates phase mixing which can cause the dissipation of Alfven waves. We investigated the dissipation of standing Alfven waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in solar spicules. Moreover, the transition region between chromosphere and corona was considered. Our numerical simulation showed that ...
